Music with Passion for Everyone: A spotlight interview with Alpha Kabisko Kaba of WOFA.

The 'Sounds of Westfield' series returns to the WWC Friday, May 16th at 7pm with a visit from WOFA, an African Drum and Dance troupe created at Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter School (PVPA). As always, thanks go to Mass Cultural Council for making this possible! This electric group is under the leadership of Alpha Kabisko Kaba. Recently, he gave us his time for a spotlight interview.

First - your group’s name! What does WOFA mean or represent?

WOFA means “Let’s Get Together” in the Susu language of Guinea

Who are the members of WOFA?

There are 21 total members. They are all students at Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter Public School spanning from 9-12 grade.

For someone who has never heard or experienced West African music, how would you describe it?

Full of energy, power, and passion.

What instruments are important in this region of music?

There are many instruments that can be used in the music of Guinea. Instruments such as the Djembe, Dun-Dun, Balaphone and Gyll are common instruments in traditional music

Do you have a favorite (instrument)?

I am often asked to play the Djembe but I like them all.

You are originally from West Africa. What does performing for the people of Massachusetts mean to you?

I have called Massachusetts home for many years. There are many people in this area I consider family. Sharing my culture is what keeps me connected to my ancestral home.

Your performance at the Westfield Woman’s Club will be a first. What fun things can we expect?

There will be amazing dancing and drumming. The audience may even get an opportunity to dance along with us. We will also demonstrate some of the instruments we will have with us

How did WOFA come to exist at PVPA? Where else do you perform?

I came to PVPA in 2008 and started WOFA shortly after that. We have performed all over Western Massachusetts and in Guinea. Outreach is a big part of PVPA, and it is important that we get to go into the community and share this artform

I watched a few of WOFA’s videos online — you guys are a blast! The first thing I noticed was the energy, movement, and joy. Where does it all come from?

The students bring their passion and joy to the dance and drumming. They keep WOFA alive.

In your videos, I also saw how excited young kids get at your shows. What does it mean to see them discover your music for the first time?

It is hard not to move when WOFA comes to town. We love when your children get to interact with us, and engage with the joy our students and this artform can bring to their community

I can’t think of a reason NOT to come to your show. Any other surprises or delights our audience can look forward to?

There is something special at every show. We invite everyone to come and celebrate with us. WOFA!
